A hands-on collaboration advancing inclusive fashion through design and technology
In Spring 2025, YKK partnered with Columbia College Chicago’s Design Solutions course, led by Professor Reyes Witt, for a 15-week journey into adaptive fashion. Students were challenged to create stylish, functional garments for individuals with limb differences—merging technical innovation with inclusive design principles.
This initiative was inspired by mentorship from Mindy Scheier of Runway of Dreams during the Fall 2024 semester. As a result, Columbia restructured the course to prioritize long-term partnerships with individual wearers, shifting the design process toward empathy-driven, user-centered solutions.
Musician, influencer, and DEI advocate Jessica Jordan Ping joined the project as both consultant and muse. Her lived experience and professional insight elevated the project from an academic exercise to a real-world innovation challenge.
Students began by researching adaptive fashion, identifying market gaps, and developing concepts focused on ease of dressing, comfort, and modern aesthetics. Using Browzwear’s VStitcher 3D platform and avatars with limb differences, they tested digital prototypes and refined garment patterns.
YKK supported the project by providing adaptive fasteners—including VISLON® zipper with Magnetic Closure, extended pull tabs, one-hand zippers, and Magnet Assist Buckle—enabling students to design with independence and dignity in mind. Jessica’s feedback throughout the process helped students make real-time adjustments, improving both fit and functionality.
The semester culminated in a final showcase, where students presented their garments and shared their design
journeys. Rachel DeBoer from YKK and Oleksandra Baukh from Browzwear offered professional feedback on construction, development, and practical applications. The event celebrated not only technical achievement but also a deeper understanding of inclusive design.
The showcase marked a meaningful conclusion to a semester of innovation, empathy, and inclusive design. YKK is proud to have supported the next generation of designers in exploring adaptive fashion and looks forward to future opportunities that advance universal design in education and industry.
