YKK Fundamental Behavior 3 - Protect the Environment - Jonathan Merward

Environmental Protection in the Developed World

The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OEDC) defines environmental protection as, “[…] any activity to maintain or restore the quality of environmental media through preventing the emission of pollutants or reducing the presence of polluting substances in environmental media.”

Over the past two hundred years many environmental problems have emerged with the growth of industry in the modern world. Many of those problems are widely understood. For example, when fossil fuels are burned they release carbon dioxide and greenhouse gasses into the environment which become trapped in the atmosphere thus causing global warming. However, some environmental problems have flown under society’s collective radar. For instance, every year the United States produces two thousand metric tons of nuclear waste. Unlike most other materials such as paper or plastic, nuclear waste can not be recycled or broken down, and it stays radioactive for thousands of years so it just gets buried deep in the earth, and the consequences are left for future generations.

Fortunately most of our environmental problems aren’t as dystopian as radioactive waste, and therefore the scientific community has been focused on identifying environmental problems and enacting practices that can help counteract the emissions of pollutants, and or restore the quality of environmental media.

One simple way that YKK reduces its environmental footprint is by changes in consumption patterns. That is to say, YKK opts to reuse or repurpose existing products like cardboard boxes or paper, as opposed to purchasing new materials and therefore raising consumption. Moreover, changes have also been made to the characteristics of some goods and services, with sustainability in the forefront. Namely, bio-based products are being utilized as a more environmentally friendly alternative to petroleum products, which produce greenhouse gasses and emit carbon dioxide in the production process. YKK takes great care to promote a positive trend towards a healthy, pollutant-free environment—as well as spreading environmental protection awareness both in-house and to the greater public at large.

Environmental protection is, at its core, our collective responsibility. And while it is a great responsibility we share, it is helpful to remember that the modes to restore and maintain a healthy environment are in the small mundane habits that we perpetuate.
