Be vigilant about safety

I have been given the opportunity to write about our Fundamental Behavior #2, “Be vigilant about safety.”  To me this means to be aware of danger, concerned about our surroundings changing, and responsive to unsafe situations.   This made me think about a personal situation that happened to me on vacation that I would like to share.

I really enjoy going to the beach during the summer.  Really, any excuse to go to a Florida beach, I’m there.  A few years ago, I was on a getaway to Destin, Florida.  The beach was full of people, and I had walked out into the surf to cool off.  I started talking to someone about where we were from and different things when I noticed a man struggling to keep his head above water.  The man was not far from me at the time so I was able to go out pull him in where he could stand on his own. He told me that his wife was out there and needed help too.  The person I’d been talking to was there to help take him to safety, so I went back to help his wife. I only had to swim with her a few yards before others on the beach, now aware of what was happening, were at our side. We all were able to get them both to shore and safety.

Once my heart, now pounding out of my chest, slowed down I was able to sit back and think about what just happened with a well-deserved beverage. I was thankful that I was able to help him and was grateful that there were many people around helping her and me. I saw many people who had never met each other come together to help change an unsafe situation for those two people to a safe ending. My point in telling you this story is that I learned we need to be vigilant about safety in everything we do. Not just at work, but in our everyday lives.  We never know when we could be in an unsafe situation that could be life or death for someone.

A friend told me, “I believe that my safety is YOUR responsibility, and your safety is MY responsibility.” In other words, I am your guardian when it comes to safety and you are mine.”  We must try to be vigilant about safety as much as possible every waking minute.

In closing, I would like to wish everyone a SAFE and prosperous New Year.
