Take a moment and think about a time when you received what you’d consider meaningful appreciation.  What did it look like?  For some, it is simply kind words given at the right time, for others it may be a token of appreciation or some level of public recognition.  However expressed, it is important to recognize individuals for a job well done and celebrate their successes.

It is very easy to get caught up in our daily activities and forget to show appreciation to those around us, especially those that help make our jobs possible. A simple “Good job” will go along way with someone who may be challenged in other areas of their life and is in need of some affirming words of appreciation from a manager or colleague. There are times when people may struggle with themselves and question how they are performing. In these instances, meaningful appreciation expressed by a manager can really help to change an employee’s outlook by giving them the assurance that they are on the right path, doing their tasks as expected and their efforts aren’t going unnoticed.

According to a study by Bersin & Associates, “Companies that provide ample employee recognition have 31% lower voluntary turnover rates than companies that don’t.”  Recognition can actually aid in building a stronger organization.  When we consider meaningful appreciation, it should be viewed from a 360-degree perspective. In other words, meaningful acknowledgement and appreciation should be extended in all directions throughout our organization.  One study suggests that peer to peer recognition is 35.7% more likely to have a positive impact on financial results than manager-only recognition.

So, as we navigate our daily lives, be it professional or personal, let’s take the time to be more intentional about expressing meaningful appreciation to those around us.  Some of the ways we can do this is by taking time to personalize our expressions, uniquely tailoring it to the recipient, and being genuine and authentic.  Each and every day definitely presents new opportunities for us to offer up praises!
