Firefighter Gear

YKK North and Central America Group manufactures heat and fire resistant NFPA compliant zippers, snaps, and closures for use in Structural Firefighter Turnout Gear, Wildland Fire, Technical Rescue, and Station Wear.   Our heat and fire resistant fasteners are designed to function under the most demanding conditions in harsh environments.  Our products are certified by UL to meet the requirements of NFPA 1971, NFPA 1977, NFPA 1975, & NFPA 1951 for firefighting personal protection equipment.

YKK offers varying degrees of water and air resistance zippers.  YKK® Airtight/Watertight zippers provide solutions in situations where access is needed, but also where an effective barrier between water, gases, chemicals, liquids, and/or other substances is important.  For example, compartments in shipping, aircraft, or civil engineering works, and covers over fermentation vats and water stores are excellent places for a YKK® Airtight/Watertight zipper.  Of course, survival suits, including dry suits, firefighter suits, and chemical suits are also ideal candidates for these zippers.

YKK® Flame Retardant (FR) zipper vs non Flame Retardant (FR) zipper:

Q. What is the difference between Flame Resistant and Flame Retardant products?
A. Flame Resistant products resist burning or ignition when exposed to a flame (YKK® zippers using Meta-Aramid tape). Flame Retardant (FR) products are slow burning when exposed to a flame, and they may self-extinguish when a flame is removed (FR treated polyester zippers and FR treated nylon hook & loop).
Q. Do your products meet NFPA regulations?
A. Yes, our zippers using Meta-Aramid tape, high temperature plastic snaps & buttons, and high temperature plastic parts meet the thermal and design requirements in NFPA 1951, 1971, 1975, 1977, 1999, and 2112. YKK uses UL as our third party certification lab.
