When I think about the approaching holiday season, and the theme of “giving back,” a familiar scripture verse comes to mind. “To whom much is given, much will be required.” (Luke 12:48) Living in a country such as the United States affords Americans an abundance of gifts and blessings that we are expected to share with the less fortunate among us. In this holiday season of giving, we should all examine our personal blessings of wealth, time, and talent, and use these gifts to benefit others.

Let us use our wealth to show others that we care. There are so many opportunities to bless a less fortunate family during the holidays. Adopt a child or a family and provide a memorable Christmas for them. Help a family struggling with overwhelming medical expenses or difficulty paying utility bills through our Employee Assistance Program. Contact local agencies to see how you can share your gift of wealth this season.

Let us bless others with a gift of our time. Holidays can be the loneliest time of the year for some. Pay a visit to the elderly at nursing homes, veterans at VA hospitals, and homebound citizens who cannot get out and enjoy the sights and sounds of the season. Use your time to better your community by serving a holiday meal to the homeless, collecting canned goods for the local food bank, or even picking up debris along the roadside.

Finally, let us bless others with a gift of our talents. Most of us would not consider ourselves “talented,” but we all have talents that we can use to benefit others. Use your talent in the kitchen to bake a treat for a lonely friend. Gather your family to “make a joyful noise” and sing Christmas carols for your neighbors. Ring the Salvation Army bell and serve at a collection kettle to help support those struggling in your community.

As the familiar verse directs, when we are blessed with an abundance of personal gifts, it is expected that we use these gifts to benefit others. What better time of year to focus on the Fundamental Behavior of “Give Back.”
