When we read the description of this week’s Fundamental Behavior, “Be Proactive,” we can probably agree that life would be better and run smoother if everyone lived and acted this way. However, the reality is that many of us are just going through the motions of life, following the routines we have set at home or work, or doing something a certain way because it is the way it has always been done. Instead of being proactive and seeking improvement, we wait and react to circumstances as they come our way.

What makes being reactive so dangerous is that it feels like we are being productive, but, much like running in place, not all movement is progress or beneficial.

Becoming proactive is a great challenge, but it is also a great opportunity for each of us to make a difference in our work environment, the quality of our work, and in our customer’s experience. Being proactive is about having an opportunity mind-set that is looking forward, acting in anticipation, recognizing problems and needs, and challenging change. I believe you will find increased job satisfaction as you practice being proactive, gaining enjoyment knowing you did the right thing in support of your work environment, co-workers, and YKK’s customers.

Embracing this Fundamental Behavior and developing a culture of being proactive can help us in so many ways to become a better place to work and better partner for our customers and communities. I encourage you to challenge and embrace this Fundamental Behavior, and I hope in your discussions this week you will consider how you can “Be Proactive” and make a difference.
