Fundamental Behavior 3Protecting the environment is YKK’s highest business priority, and that is not just corporate fluff! This command came directly from Chairman Yoshida when, in 1994, he set the YKK Group’s Environmental Pledge, which reads in part:

“The YKK Group proclaims that it will address and promote ‘harmony with the environment’ as the highest priority of its business activities.”

These were bold statements in 1994, and they are just as clear, important, and relevant today. Our community demands it; our customers demand it; and we demand it for ourselves.

With that mission in mind, what can you and I do about it? A lot, actually. For example, in 2014, a small group of interested employees decided it would be a great idea to honor the YKK Pledge by installing solar power in our Anaheim, California facility. Over the course of 18 months they proved the business case, obtained approvals and funds, and had the system installed on the roof in Anaheim. It was a great team effort involving a wide range of employees in different areas of the business, and I am very proud of their achievement. What they did will continue to pay dividends for the next several decades.

As I write this note, I can see the system is currently generating 77 kilowatts of electricity (10 a.m. PST). Since the system went on line in 2015, it has generated a total of over 1.67 gigawatts. If you are like me, and cannot comprehend how big that is – it is enough electricity to charge 309 million cell phones. More importantly, our use of solar power has kept 1,000 tons of CO2 out of our atmosphere in its first 2 years of service alone. That is a real contribution to the community and our planet.
